What Is Calorific Value?
Every fuel or substance used in energy production releases a different amount of energy during combustion. This amount of energy is called the calorific value. Scientifically, the calorific value is defined as the amount of heat energy released when a unit mass or volume of a substance is completely burned, and it is typically expressed in cal/g (calories per gram).
Calorific value is a fundamental parameter for determining the energy potential of products in the energy sector, industrial processes, food science, and academic research.
How Is Calorific Value Measured?
Calorific value measurements are performed using bomb calorimeters.
In the energy sector, the quality control, transportation, and storage of fuels such as coal and biomass depend on these measurements. In the food industry, calorific value determines the energy content (calories) of food, which is used in nutritional planning and product labeling. When these analyses are evaluated along with moisture and compositional parameters (such as sulfur and hydrogen content), they reveal the true energy potential of the material.
Higher and Lower Heating Values
Calorific value is assessed in two forms.
The Higher Heating Value (HHV), also known as the Gross Calorific Value, represents the total amount of heat released when the fuel is completely burned. The Lower Heating Value (LHV), or Net Calorific Value, indicates the remaining amount of heat after subtracting the portion lost as water vapor in the combustion gases that cannot be recovered.
The Importance of Calorimeter Analyses
Calorimeters enable precise measurement of the gross calorific value under laboratory conditions. However, these raw results alone do not fully reflect the real-world energy performance of a fuel.
The obtained data should be adjusted for moisture and other influencing parameters to calculate the lower heating value and accurately interpret the actual energy yield.
